Africa Heartwood Project
Is a volunteer, grassroots US non-profit dedicated to fighting poverty through clean water, orphan support, and sustainable livelihoods
Our Story
The founders planned their “humanitarian honeymoon” to a Liberian refugee camp in Ghana. There they saw first-hand the tragedy of poverty, and resolved to try to first understand, and then to help.
Drum-Building Connection
In Ghana the founder became friends with local drum builders and later agreed to help them market their drums to better support their families and preserve their culture.

Dry woven Elephant Grass, leather handle
HANDWOVEN BY WOMEN IN GHANA – Crafted by the skilled hands of Bolgatanga artisans, each basket with handle is woven from vibrant, sustainably sourced elephant grass, featuring distinctive, colorful geometric patterns that celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. Each is unique, just like the woman who made it!
STURDY BUILD FOR EVERYDAY USE – Built to endure the rigors of daily use, our baskets are reinforced with a sturdy base and equipped with durable, stitched leather handles for easy carrying. They are ideal for shopping, harvesting, stylish home organization, and use as a farmers market bag or garden tote. Ideal for storage at home or as a thoughtful gift.
FLAT PACKED AND VARIETY OF DESIGNS – Each flat-packed native basket features a variety of colors and unique designs, randomly selected to add a touch of uniqueness to your space. Easily reshape your basket by spraying or immersing in water, shaking off excess water, hand shaping while wet, and allowing it to air dry. Just 5 minutes of simple care, and you’re done!
SPACIOUS & RESPONSIBLY SOURCED – Our baskets offer ample space, approximately 17 inches in height (including a 7-inch handle) and 16-17 inches in diameter, ideal for a variety of uses. Crafted using traditional methods and locally sourced elephant grass, each farmer’s market basket stands out from a typical straw basket, supporting the preservation of artisanal techniques and the use of regional materials.
EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES – Your purchase directly supports the Africa Heartwood Project’s initiatives to provide livelihood and community development for women artisans and their families in Ghana, helping to maintain their livelihoods and cultural traditions.
